I decided to give reviewing a quick try. This movie has been occupying my PS2 for quite awhile now.
On a fateful day in Venice Beach, JB (Jack Black) and KG (Kyle Gass) meet and realize they are destined to make history by combining their musical genius. But when overnight success eludes them, they set out to find the legendary "Pick of Destiny" - a special guitar pick believed to possess magical powers that can make any open mike wannabe a rock legend. Their epic quest, which includes run-ins with the law, sorority hotties, Sasquatch, and a show-down with Satan will make you "laugh till it hurts and then you'll laugh some more."
That last line does not fall short. If you are a hardcore fan of The D then this movie will become your bible! If you aren't a D fan, then you'll probably become one after watch this movie. I was never a HUGE D fan, because I saw them as a novelty band. Sure the songs were hilarious, but I never thought they had potential. Well after watching this movie I realized how musically talented they both were! The songs were absolutely incredible, and I just couldn't stop laughing! There are numerous guest appearances such as Meatloaf, Dio, Tim Robbins, John C. Reilly, Dave Grohl, and more! It's insane!
To get a little more in-depth about the movie, I'll create a better description than the one above. May contain spoilers, but I'll try to keep those on the hush-hush.
The movie starts with the song Kickapoo, where we see where JB grew up. He was in a highly religious family who did not condone of his rocking. One night his father (Played by Meatloaf) has had enough, and destroys every scrap of rock music young Jabels has in his room. Of course he forgets the large Dio poster behind the door. When his father leaves, JB "prays" to Dio for guidance. The poster comes to life and Dio tells him his destiny. "Where the ocean meets the sand, you will form a strong alliance, and the world's most awesome band."
So JB went to every Hollywood (the town Dio said to go) until he finally reached Hollywood, California. There he meets KG who is this over-arrogant musician who is a total fraud. The destiny is seen when KG and JB make an awesome tune together using classical songs (Classico). There they get their first fan, Lee. When he asks for the name of their band, KG replies that they aren't a band, and flicks his guitar pick at JB before leaving.
Now it's night and Jack has nowhere to go (Baby). He seeks refuge on a bench, which is quickly interrupted when he has a run-in with "the" Clockwork Orange gang. They pretty much beat the hell out of Jables, and KG is walking by and hides behind a dumpster as he watches the event. When the gang leaves KG makes it seem to Jack as if HE drove them away. Jack wants to repay him, so Kyle replies "We'll work something out". Now he has a place to stay.
Now we get to see how much of a fraud Kyle really is. When Jack shows off his singing abilities (sings Holy Diver by Dio) to make it into the "Kyle Gass Project", KG tells him that he knows Dio and all the guys from Sabbath. So now JB is quickly taken in by this dude.He cleans his apartment, scores him weed, and finally undergoes training for the KGP. After attempting cock push-ups, and the powerslide, Jack goes into the Gig Simulator. Which consists of wearing a silly outfit while on "stage", performing for an "audience". When KG orders a pizza Lee delivers it and gets to watch the simulator take place. When JB pretty much fails it, he attempts the powerslide, but falls and crushes his guitar. All of a sudden the answering machine clicks on with KG's mom saying that they won't be sending him rent checks anymore because "15 years of trying to become a famous musician" is enough. JB finally sees that he's a fraud.
Now they discover their destiny....in an odd way. They each of birth marks on their ass which spells Tenacious D when put together.
So now they have to write a masterpiece if they want to win the open-mic contest. Upon doing so they find out that all the great guitar players were using the SAME guitar pick. When finding more info on it, the find out that it was carved from Satan's tooth. Thus becoming the Pick of Destiny. So, of course, they set out to steal it from it's home at the Rock'N'Roll History Museum.
That's as much as I'll give. If that caught your eye, then see this movie!!!
I really can't recommend this film enough. Also remember to purchase the soundtrack while you're at it!
I have an odd rating for this movie. But because this movie isn't for everybody and tends to drone on a few times I would have to give this movie:
3/5 stars.
Cheers!!

Great review mate.
I saw this movie as soon as it was released on DVD and I have to say it was great, I wasn't a Hardcore D fan either I really only knew them from their song Tribute and what an awesome song that was. The movie was hilarious and Jack Black is a great actor and almost all the films he has been in he has player to perfection. Also I have most of the songs of the soundtrack and they are all great.
Once again great review mate and hope to see some mroe of yours, also here is the film clip to Tribute always funny to watch
Hahahahaha I love Tenacious D!...I got both albums and the movie...When the first album came out it didn't come out of my stereo for like 2 months and I listened to it everyday...Great review dude...You should definitely do more of them...One of my favorite bits from the movie was when JB ate some magic mushrooms and had a mini-adventure with Sasquatch...Funny as hell _________________
Thanks man!
Haha, that was a great scene. My favorite was always when JB pulls the wig off of Kage, just seeing his reaction when he's holding his "hair" is proceless.
Cheers!!
